Winter Weather Poses Increased Traffic Hazards for Chicago Workers

Constr_Winter

Winter weather can pose various hazards to Chicago weather, from ice sidewalks to frostbite and much more. However, some of the most serious winter workplace accidents happen on our roads. Poor visibility, lack of traction, and other factors make driving in the winter much more challenging for the average motorist. What can you do if you were injured due to a winter traffic accident? Can a Chicago workers’ compensation lawyer help you cover your damages?

Numerous Winter Accidents Injure Chicago Workers

Within the past few days, numerous workers suffered injuries due to car crashes in winter conditions. In early January of 2025, it was reported that a car had crashed into a public works machine in Skokie. A crew was working on a potential ruptured water main when an out-of-control vehicle approached the area and slammed into the public works machine.

One worker was injured in the collision, but first responders say that his medical treatment was minor. However, he was still hospitalized – implying that he might have to miss work for a few weeks or months. Police reported that they were not sure what caused the crash, although images from the scene appear to show ice and snow on the road.

A few days later, a school bus crashed on I-290 in Itasca – causing one injury. The incident involved the school bus colliding with a Jeep Grand Cherokee under unclear circumstances. Initially, first responders stated that there were multiple injuries – although this figure was later revised to just one hospitalization.

The injured party was a park district employee, and they reportedly suffered minor injuries. Again, it is difficult to say how “minor” these injuries really were – especially if the worker is unable to earn income for the next few weeks or months. That being said, this accident clearly could have been worse – as the school bus was carrying over 50 students and seven adult employees.

What Can I Do After a Crash on the Job?

If you were injured in a crash while carrying out job-related duties in Chicago, you are likely eligible to pursue workers’ compensation benefits. However, intoxicated individuals are generally barred from seeking workers’ compensation. In addition, it might be more advantageous to pursue a car accident lawsuit for non-economic damages. A workers’ compensation claim only provides compensation for economic damages – like missed income and medical treatment.

Always seek medical attention after a crash – whether you were on the job or not. Accept treatment from first responders and allow yourself to be transported to the nearest hospital – even if you think your injuries are minor.
